VOTE NOV. 5th, Tammy Ridout for Dale District Board of Supervisor

Tammy Cahoon Ridout,

BSDH, RDH

“I Dare You” Outstanding Leader
Tammy Cahoon Ridout, BSDH, RDH, a resident of the Dale District for over 10 years, is running for Dale District Board of Supervisors on Nov. 5th, 2019.  A lifelong resident of Chesterfield County, she received the “I Dare You” Outstanding Leadership Award when she graduated with Honors from Clover Hill High School in 1979, and this is an accolade she continues to pursue.  She went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Hygiene from the MCV-VCU School of Dentistry, graduating with honors in 1983. Since that time, Tammy has advocated relentlessly for all Virginians, particularly those with special needs and the underserved, for accessible oral health care and equity in care delivery.  Her passionate activism is evidenced by her work at Central State Hospital, Hiram W. Davis Medical Center, and as a faculty member and lecturer at the VCU Dental School.  Tammy has served in an elected position with the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, President of the Virginia Dental Hygienists’ Association, President and Trustee of the Greater Richmond Dental Hygienists’ Association and on the first Board of Directors for the Virginia Oral Health Coalition, Inc. She currently serves on the Virginia Board of Dentistry, an appointment she received from Gov. Terry McAufflie in 2017.

Parent, Wife, Neighbor
As the mother of an adult son, Sean, and two adult stepchildren, Robert and Annie, Tammy is keenly aware that young professionals don’t view Dale as their First-Choice Community.  The result is that many choose to live elsewhere.  Her years of experience as a single mother, health care provider, business owner (along with her husband, Freddy Ridout, a Chesterfield business owner since 1983), caregiver, and civic leader in her community lend her a unique compassion for the citizens of Dale and an understanding of the challenges ahead.  As a proven tireless and creative leader, Tammy perseveres to support the citizens of Dale, pledges to listen to all concerns from both the citizen and business communities, and promises to cultivate a quality of life well-deserved by current residents; one that will revitalize the community and attract new business, young professionals and growing families.

Community Servant
Tammy was the first dental hygienist on the Head Start Committee in Chesterfield County and has donated her services to the Give Kids A Smile Day at the Richmond Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs as well as Crossover Health Clinic.  She supported the Mission of Mercy Wise Dental Project prior to its inception, when it was originally part of the Rural Area Medical Corp. (RAM) outreach.   This project will celebrate 20 years of service this July!  Tammy currently holds District and Regional leadership positions in the Boy Scouts of America, working with youth and serving as the Scouting for Food District Chair and on the District Advancement Committee.  Additionally, she is an active member of the Chesterfield County Fair Association, the Chester Business Association Board of Directors, Bethia United Methodist Church and the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce.  In addition, she and her Caring Canines Therapy dog can be seen at memory care centers, Sheltering Arms Rehabilitation, schools, senior living centers and they are Read2Rover regulars at the Central Library.

Advocate
Tammy has been a visionary leader in her health care advocacy work.  She has fought at national and state levels for legislative and regulatory policy changes to ensure all Virginians have access to oral health care.  Her efforts were instrumental in broadening the scope of practice for registered dental hygienists and ensuring low-income children, pregnant women, the elderly and individuals with disabilities can participate in Smiles for Children, the Virginia Medicaid plan.  Her reputation for fairness and equitability led to her election as one of four members on the ADHA Ethics Committee.  In 2017 she was appointed by Governor McAuliffe to the Virginia Board of Dentistry and is currently serving on its Legislative Subcommittee.  Honored over the years with several national and state awards from the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and the Virginia Dental Hygienists’ Association, Tammy was humbled to receive the Dr. Franci Stavropoulos Outstanding Dental Hygiene Alumnus Award in 2018 from VCU School of Dentistry.  This award recognized her loyalty to the school, her support of alumni and students, and dedicated service to her profession and community.
